Current Gallery: volumes ( piece)
I am interested in photographing things that are hyper-contextualized. I project images onto the walls of my office and isolate elements of the photo with geometric shapes while introducing a physicality to the flat image that deepens the illusion of depth. I work with low grade equipment and enjoy the muddy artifacts of poor and unusual light, that human touch that the computer can only make muddier. This processing is another layer of interpretation that invites the computer to collaborate on the degradation of the image. I use a heavy carousel projector and slide photos purchased off eBay and begged from friends. Most of the images are tourist snapshots of a higher quality than one might normally expect, taken by the prosumers of previous generations. I think these photos are beautiful in their composition and my own artistic efforts jump off from their inspiration. I am remixing them in a sense, but my intention diverges greatly from the original photographer's intentions and thus this is a unique piece of art. I use the walls of my office and an old digital camera that has distinctive flaws and dead pixels and washes out in ways I can anticipate and use to effect. I have a variety of lights to wash out and highlight certain aspects of the photos.
